Emotional, behavioral, attention, sleep, and mood concerns can look different at different ages. A careful psychiatric evaluation considers the young person, family context, development, school functioning, medical history, safety, and the environments where symptoms occur.

Concerns that may lead families to seek an evaluation

Families may request an evaluation for anxiety, persistent sadness, mood changes, attention or impulsivity concerns, sleep problems, school decline, irritability, trauma-related symptoms, unusual behavior, or changes in daily functioning. These experiences can have more than one cause and require individual assessment.

What the evaluation considers

Depending on age and the reason for the visit, the evaluation may include:

• The child or teen's description of current concerns
• Parent or caregiver observations and developmental history
• School, learning, peer, and family context
• Medical conditions, medications, sleep, and substance exposure when relevant
• Prior evaluations, therapy, school supports, or treatment response
• Strengths, goals, safety, and the need for additional testing or referral

Treatment planning with families

Recommendations may include education, parent guidance, talk therapy, medication discussion, coordination with school or another clinician when authorized, or referral for psychological, neurodevelopmental, medical, or specialized therapy services. Medication is not automatic and is considered only after an individualized evaluation.

In-person appointments are available in Miami. Telehealth may be appropriate for some established or new patients located in Florida, depending on age, symptoms, safety, clinical needs, and applicable requirements.
