Who Renova Health evaluates

Renova Health evaluates children age 5 and older, adolescents, adults, and older adults. Appointments are available in the Miami office and by secure telehealth for eligible patients located in Florida. The appropriate format depends on age, clinical needs, safety, and applicable requirements.

What may be discussed

The conversation is tailored to the reason for the visit. A careful evaluation may review:

• Current symptoms, their timing, and their effect on daily life
• Medical conditions, medications, supplements, and substance use
• Past psychiatric care, treatment response, and side effects
• Sleep, appetite, energy, concentration, school or work, and relationships
• Developmental and family context when relevant

What happens after the evaluation

An initial visit does not always produce a final diagnosis or medication recommendation. Dr. Villa explains the clinical impressions, uncertainties, and reasonable next steps. Recommendations may include education, additional assessment, talk therapy, medication discussion, laboratory or medical follow-up, coordination with another clinician, or referral when a different specialty or level of care is more appropriate.

How to prepare

Bring a current medication and supplement list, relevant records when available, and questions you want to discuss. A parent or legal guardian should participate when required for a minor. Do not send sensitive medical information through the website inquiry form.

A diagnosis is a working clinical formulation

A psychiatric diagnosis is not based on a single questionnaire or one difficult week. Dr. Brian Villa MD considers the pattern, duration, severity, context, and functional effect of symptoms. He also reviews reasonable alternatives, including medical conditions, medication effects, substance use, sleep disruption, trauma, developmental differences, and more than one psychiatric condition occurring together. Sometimes the most accurate conclusion after an initial visit is that additional history, records, observation, or medical coordination is needed.

Evaluations differ by age and circumstance

For children and adolescents, the evaluation may include developmental history, school functioning, caregiver observations, family context, and age-appropriate private discussion. Adult evaluations may place more emphasis on work, relationships, independent functioning, reproductive considerations, substance use, and previous treatment. Older-adult evaluations may require closer review of cognition, neurologic or medical changes, medication interactions, and input from another clinician or support person when appropriate.

Medication is not automatic at the first appointment

The purpose of the visit is to understand the concern and identify reasonable next steps. A prescription may be discussed when the information is sufficient and medication appears appropriate, but it is not guaranteed. The plan may instead include psychotherapy, further assessment, laboratory or medical follow-up, records from a previous clinician, changes to sleep or substance use, monitoring, or referral to a different specialist or level of care.
