Substance use and mental health often overlap

Alcohol, cannabis, sedatives, stimulants, opioids, and other substances can affect mood, anxiety, sleep, attention, judgment, and physical health. Psychiatric symptoms may contribute to substance use, result from substance use, or occur independently. A careful evaluation helps clarify what is happening and what level of care may be appropriate.

When an evaluation may help

• Substance use is affecting work, school, relationships, sleep, or health
• Anxiety, depression, trauma symptoms, ADHD concerns, or mood changes occur alongside substance use
• There are concerns about medication interactions, withdrawal, or escalating use
• Prior treatment has not addressed both psychiatric symptoms and substance use
• A patient or family wants guidance about appropriate next steps

What Renova Health provides

Brian Villa, MD can provide psychiatric assessment of substance use and co-occurring mental health concerns. The evaluation may include current patterns of use, withdrawal history, medications, medical risks, safety, prior treatment, psychiatric symptoms, and goals.

Recommendations may include psychiatric medication management when clinically appropriate, supportive psychotherapy within psychiatric care, coordination with existing clinicians, or referral to a specialized addiction-treatment program. Services and medication availability must be confirmed during scheduling and evaluation.

What this outpatient practice does not replace

Renova Health is not a medical detoxification, inpatient, residential, or emergency-stabilization facility. Patients who may need supervised withdrawal, intensive addiction treatment, or emergency medical care should be evaluated by an appropriate facility or emergency department.

Withdrawal and emergency safety

Withdrawal from alcohol, benzodiazepines, or other substances can be medically dangerous. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room for seizures, confusion, hallucinations, severe vomiting, loss of consciousness, chest pain, breathing problems, overdose, severe intoxication, suicidal thoughts, or another urgent concern.

Renova Health offers in-office psychiatric appointments in Miami and telehealth for eligible patients located in Florida. Telehealth is not appropriate for every substance-related concern, and a higher level of care may be recommended after review.
