Grief and Loss Support in Miami

Evidence-based psychiatric evaluation and individualized care for patients age 5 and older in Miami and throughout Florida.

Understanding the concern

Grief is a personal response to loss and is not automatically a mental disorder. Psychiatric evaluation may help when grief is accompanied by persistent depression, severe anxiety, major sleep disruption, substance use, safety concerns, or difficulty maintaining basic daily functioning.

Common signs and symptoms

  • Intense sadness, yearning, anger, guilt, or emotional numbness
  • Sleep, appetite, concentration, or energy changes
  • Withdrawal from relationships or usual responsibilities
  • Worsening depression, anxiety, trauma symptoms, or substance use
  • Thoughts of death, suicide, or being unable to continue

What a psychiatric evaluation considers

Dr. Brian Villa, MD considers the nature and timing of the loss, cultural and family context, prior mental health history, current symptoms, medical concerns, medications, substance use, functioning, and safety.

Care at Renova Health
